Bio

"It’s a simple formula: Hard work, thorough preparation, and genuine care for each client."

Steve dedicates himself to discovering and understanding the far-reaching impact of his clients’ life-changing injuries. “I am constantly amazed by our clients’ strength, resilience, and dedication to doing everything possible to overcome a significant injury or grow beyond the grief and pain caused by the loss of a loved one. Their strength inspires me to fight for them.”

Each victory enables clients to pay for necessary medical treatment, recover lost wages, obtain any retraining needed to return to work, and receive compensation for life-changing injuries or the loss of a loved one. While money cannot restore one’s health or bring back a loved one, our civil court justice system recognizes that financial compensation is the best way to address such harms.

Personal Background

Steve’s upbringing and diverse life experiences instilled a relentless work ethic, care for others, and a strong sense of fairness. These attributes help Steve learn and effectively convey each client’s story throughout the case and to the jury during trial.

Steve grew up in Kansas City and was raised by his dad, an elevator constructor. Although a “city kid,” he spent significant time at his grandparents’ small farm in rural Kansas. He is the first member of his extended family to graduate from college. Throughout college and law school, he volunteered with various community service organizations, including working with physically handicapped children and an elementary school literacy program. Steve also played rugby during this time.

Eager to experience a different part of the world after law school, Steve served as an attorney on the island of Yap in the western Pacific Ocean. As the Assistant Legislative Counsel, he drafted legislation and advised elected officials on legal and policy matters. After 2½ years on Yap, he moved to San Diego in 2000.

Steve then worked for two prominent law firms, defending physicians in medical malpractice cases and various defendants in personal injury lawsuits. Through this experience, he learned the methods used by defense attorneys and insurance companies to minimize or defeat claims brought by victims of wrongful conduct. However, Steve became dissatisfied with helping insurance companies escape or minimize responsibility.

In 2004, Steve “switched sides” and began representing individuals and families harmed by others’ dangerous actions.

Outside of the office, Steve enjoys time with his wife and two adult children. He also enjoys surfing, mountain biking, camping, and other outdoor activities. When his kids were younger, he coached their youth sports teams.
